교육의 본질, 목적, 내용, 방법, 교육철학, 지식론, 도덕론 따위에 걸쳐 존 듀이의 실용주의, 진보주의 교육 이론을 집대성한 책이다.

저자소개

존 듀이 (John Dewey)
1859~1952. 미국의 철학자, 교육학자. 버몬트주(州) 벌링턴(Burlington) 출생.
버몬트 대학을 졸업하고, 존스홉킨스 대학에서 학위를 받았다. 미네소타, 미시간, 시카고, 컬럼비아 각 대학에서 교수를 역임하였으며 ‘전국교육협회’ 명예회장을 지냈다. 서민의 경험을 프래그머티즘(Pragmatism 실용주의)에 의해 소화하여 보편적 교육학설을 창출하여 세계 사상계에 기여하였다. 주요 저서에 <학교와 사회>(1899) <민주주의와 교육 Democracy and Education>(1916) <경험으로서의 예술 Art as Experience>(1933) <논리학: 탐구의 이론 Logic: The Theory of Inquiry>(1938) <경험과 교육 Experience and Education>(1938) 등이 있다.
