저자소개

버트런드 러셀 (Bertrand Arthur William Russell)
1872~1970. 영국의 논리학자, 철학자, 수학자, 사회사상가. 트렐레크(Trelleck) 출생.
1890년 케임브리지 대학교의 트리니티 칼리지에 장학생으로 들어갔다. 수학과 철학에서 두각을 나타내어 1893년 학교를 최우등으로 졸업하고, 1895년 선임연구원(Fellow)이 되었다. 제1차 세계대전 중의 반전운동(反戰運動)이 화근이 되어 대학에서 쫓겨났고, 1918년 6개월간 옥고를 치렀다. 이후 유럽 각국과 러시아, 미국 등 여러 나라에서 대학 강의를 맡으며 저술활동에 주력했다. 여러 가지 사회운동을 한 것으로 높은 평가를 받으며, 1950년 노벨문학상을 수상했다. 주요 저서에 <철학의 문제들 The Problems of Philosophy>(1912) <외계의 지식 Our Knowledge of the External World as a Field for Scientific Method in Philosophy>(1914) <수리철학 서설 Introduction to Mathematical Philosophy>(1919) <정신의 분석 The Analysis of Mind>(1921) <물질의 분석 The Analysis of Matter>(1927) <의미와 진실의 탐구 An Inquiry into Meaning and Truth>(1940) <서양 철학사 A History of Western Philosophy>(1945) 등이 있다.
