<속물열전> 영문판.
잡지 <펀치Punch>에 연재된 〈영국의 속물들 The Snobs of England, by One of Themselves>(1846~1847)을 1848년 단행본으로 엮은 풍자소설로, 런던 사람들의 속물 근성(俗物根性)을 날카롭게 묘사하였다.

저자소개

윌리엄 새커리 (William Makepeace Thackeray)
1811~1863. 영국의 소설가. 인도 콜카타(Kolkata) 출생.
인도에 재무관으로 부임 중이던 아버지를 4세 때 여의고 이듬해에 개가(改嫁)한 어머니와 작별, 본국으로 돌아가 숙모의 집에서 자랐다. 케임브리지 대학을 중퇴하고 유럽을 여행하며 견문을 넓혔다. 1848년 소설 <속물열전 The Book of Snobs>을 발표하여 작가로서의 입지를 굳혔다. 이어 <허영의 시장 Vanity Fair>(1848)을 발표하였으며, 미국 여행 경험을 토대로 <버지니아인 The Virginians>(1857?1859)을 썼다. 그는 상류, 중류 계급의 허영(虛榮)에 찬 생활을 상세히 또는 풍자적으로 묘사하면서도 인간의 약점에 대해서는 지극히 동정적이었다. 주요 도서에 (1844) (1848-1850) (1852) 등이 있다.
