Life on the Mississippi (1883)는 Mark Twain이 미국 남북 전쟁 이전에 미시시피 강에서 증기선 조종사로 일했던 시절의 회고록이며 또한 세인트 루이스에서 뉴 올리언스까지 미시시피 강을 따라 여행 한 그의 여행을 기록한 여행 책자입니다. 유머러스 한 일화와 묘사로 마크 트웨인이 그의 가장 훌륭한 소설 인 허클베리 핀의 모험의 아이디어를 제공했다.

저자소개

마크 트웨인이라는 필명으로 활동한 새뮤얼 랭혼 클레먼스는 미주리주에서 가난한 개척민의 아들로 태어났다. 4세 때 가족을 따라 미시시피 강가의 해니벌로 이사왔으며 12세 때 아버지를 여의었다. 그 후 인쇄소의 견습공이 되어 일을 배우고 각지를 전전하였다. 1857년 미시시피강의 수로안내인이 되었는데 해니벌로 이사한 뒤부터 이 시기까지의 생활과 경험은 후일 작가 형성에 큰 영향을 주었다. 그의 필명인 마크 트웨인은 강의 뱃사람 용어로 안전수역을 나타내는 ‘두 길’(한 길은 6 ft)을 뜻한다. 주요 작품으로는 미시시피 강 유역을 배경으로 개구쟁이 소년인 톰 소여와 허클베리 핀의 모험을 그린 동화 《톰소여의 모험》이 있다
