라 갈라테아(La Galatea)(1585) : 라 갈라테아(La Galatea)(1585)는 세르반테스가 돈키호테(Don Quixote) 1부(1605)를 출간하기 무려 20년 전에 발표한 작품입니다만, 당시에는, 그리고 현재까지도 그리 유명해 지지는 못했습니다……. 그래서 세르반테스는 더더욱 돈키호테(Don Quixote)의 선풍적인 인기를 예측하지 못했더랬죠. 돈키호테(Don Quixote)에서는 그의 전작 라 갈라테아(La Galatea)(1585)를 은근히 PPL하는 장면이 삽입되어 있습니다. 심지어 ‘그 책의 저자’ 세르반테스에 대해서도!

노르웨이 북클럽(Norwegian Book Clubs) 세계 문학사상 가장 위대한 작품(most meaningful book of all time) 1위(2002) : 노르웨이 오슬로의 노르웨이 북클럽(Norwegian Book Clubs)은 전 세계 54개국의 유명 작가를 대상으로 세계 문학사상 가장 위대한 작품(most meaningful book of all time)을 조사하였습니다. 일부 조사에 참가하지 않은 작가도 있으나, 결론적으로 50% 이상의 작가들이 지지한 돈키호테가 압도적인 1위를 차지하였습니다. 가장 많은 책을 올린 이는 러시아 작가 도스토예프스키로 4권입니다. 죄와 벌(Преступление и наказание, Crime and Punishment)(1867), 백치(Идиот, The Idiot)(1869), 악령(Бесы, Demons)(1872), 카라마조프가의 형제들(Братья Карамазовы, The Brothers Karamazov)(1880). 이 조사는 일부 국가 혹은 영미권을 넘어서, 전 지구적으로 광범위하게 조사하였다는 점에서 의미 있는 조사로 평가받습니다.

최초의 근대 소설(the first modern novel)! 세계 문학의 정수(one of the pinnacles of world literature)! 지혜의 왕자(el Principe de los Ingenios)! 돈키호테(Don Quixote)의 저자 미구엘 드 세르반테스(Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra)(1547~1616)는 지혜의 왕자(el Principe de los Ingenios)란 찬사를 받았을 정도로 서구 문학계에서, 특히 스페인 문화권에서 신적인 존재로 추앙받는 대문호입니다. 그러나 그의 삶은 기구하기 이를 데 없었습니다……. 세르반테스는 카스티야 왕국(Crown of Castile)의 마드리드(Madrid) 알칼라 데 에나레스(Alcala de Henares)에서 이발사와 외과 의사를 겸한 아버지의 아들로 태어났습니다. 그가 살던 16세기는 칼을 다루는 이발사가 외과 의사를 겸업하는 것이 자연스러웠던 시대로, 그가 태어난 집과 세례를 받은 교회는 현재까지 잘 보존되어 있습니다. 지금이야 의사가 번듯한 사자 직업이지만, 당시 세르반테스의 부모와 일곱 형제는 경제적인 궁핍으로 살 길을 찾아 마드리드는 물론 코르도바(Cordoba), 세비야(Sevilla) 등 스페인 전역을 떠돌며 살았습니다.

폭행 사건에 연루된 세르반테스는 1569년 이탈리아 로마로 떠나 이탈리아 주교 Giulio Acquaviva 가문에 고용되어 근무했고, 이듬해 1570년 스페인 해군(Spanish Navy infantry regiment)에 입대하였습니다. 세르반테스는 레판토에서 신성동맹과 오스만 제국이 맞붙은 레판토 해전(Battle of Lepanto)(1571)에 참전해 승리를 거두었습니다! 그러나, 왼손에 심각한 부상을 입고 평생 고통 받았습니다. 부상에도 불구하고 각종 탐험과 전투에 열정적으로 복무하였으나, 1575년 나폴리를 출항해 해적(Barbary pirates)에 나포되어 아프리카 알제리에 무려 수감되었습니다. 그나마 몸값 때문에 죽지는 않았고, 5년이 흐른 1580년에야 간신히 풀려났습니다. 비록 평생 후유증이 남는 부상을 입었으나, 세르반테스는 그의 참전을 자신의 저서 Viaje del Parnaso(Journey to Parnassus)(1614)에서 자랑하기도 하였습니다. 그리스에서는 레판토 항구(Puerto de Lepanto)에 그의 이름을 딴 공원을 조성하고, 그의 동상을 세웠습니다. ‘문학가’로써가 아닌 ‘참전군인’의 의미가 있는 동상이란 점에서 세계 유일!!

그의 첫 작품 라 갈라테아(La Galatea)(1585)가 출간되었습니다. 본디 2부를 기획하였으나, 1부가 폭망하는 바람에 그냥 묻혀 버렸습니다... 인세 수입이 보잘 것 없어 구매 대리인(purchasing agent)(1587), 정부의 세금 징수원(government tax collector)(1592) 등을 전전하였으나 그리 형편은 좋지 않았습니다. 설상가상으로 금전적인 문제로 인하여 잠시나마 세비야 교도소에 수감되었으나, 수감 기간 동안 세기의 걸작 돈키호테(Don Quixote) 1부(1605)를 구상하였으니, 결과적으로는 전화위복이 된 셈입니다. 돈키호테(Don Quixote) 1부(1605)에 이어 모범소설집(Novelas ejemplares)(1613)을, 그리고 7년이 흐른 후에 돈키호테(Don Quixote) 2부(1615)를 출간하였습니다만, 국내외적인 명성이 무색하게 그리 큰 수입을 얻지는 못했습니다.

말년에는 마드리드의 작은 수녀원에 의탁하였고, 숨진 후에 아내와 함께 이곳에 묻혔습니다. 그의 유명세에 비해 사생활은 잘 알려져 있지 않은데, 카탈리나 드 살라자리 팔라시오스(Catalina de Salazar y Palacios)와 결혼하였으며, 다른 여자와의 사이에서 이사벨(Isabel)을 낳았습니다. 그의 관은 1673년 수녀원 보수 공사 당시 위치를 잃었다가, 무려 400년이 흐른 현대에서야 재발굴되었습니다. 관에 쓰인 그의 이름과 왼팔과 가슴의 상처 등을 통해 세르반테스임을 확인한 후 2015년 다시 안장되었습니다. 그가 ‘자신의 최고 걸작’이라고 자부한 Los trabajos de Persiles y Sigismunda(1617)는 죽기 3일전에 완성하였으며, 사후에 출간되었습니다. 2016년은 돈키호테(1905)의 출간 400주년으로, 그를 기리는 연극 Cervantina가 제작되었습니다.

미겔 데 세르반테스 상(Premio Miguel de Cervantes)(1976) : 1975년 스페인 문화부(Ministry of Culture of Spain)가 제정한 미겔 데 세르반테스 상(Premio Miguel de Cervantes)(1976)은 ‘스페인어 문학에서 가장 권위 있고 보상받는 상(most prestigious and remunerative award given for Spanish-language literature)’으로 상금 또한 두둑합니다. 무려 12만 5천 유로! 스페인어로 집필한 작가와 그의 작품에 대하여 수상하며, 1976년부터 시상하고 있습니다. 역대 수상자 중에 노벨 문학상 수상자도 3명이 포함됩니다. 옥타비오 파즈(Octavio Paz), 마리오 바르가스 요사(Mario Vargas Llosa), 카밀로 호세 셀라(Camilo Jose Cela).

세르반테스 문화원(Instituto Cervantes)(1991) : 대부분의 문화원은 해당 국가 명을 붙입니다. 영국문화원, 일본문화원, 이탈리아문화원……. 이런 식으로 말이지요. 그러나 일부 국가에서는 ‘인물’의 이름을 붙이는 경우가 있습니다. 한국은 세종학당, 중국엔 공자학원, 그리고 스페인에는? 바로 세르반테스 문화원(Instituto Cervantes)(1991)! 스페인어의 별칭 중 하나가 세르반테스의 언어(the language of Cervantes)일 정도로, 한명의 인물이 해당 국가를 대표할만한 업적이 있을 때만 가능한 브랜드입니다. 세계 최대의 스페인어 역사 및 문학 작품의 디지털 아카이브 Miguel de Cervantes Virtual Library 또한 세르반테스의 이름을 따와 명명하였습니다. 한국의 세르반테스 문화원은 한국 외대 내에 위치합니다.
