조너선 스위프트(Jonathan Swift)는 영국인? 아일랜드인! : 영국과 북아일랜드는 분명 ‘하나의 국가’입니다만, 남아일랜드는 현재까지도 독립국입니다. 영토의 북부를 빼앗긴(?!) 남아일랜드 입장에서 영국은 짜증나지만 나보다 힘센 이웃이지요. 이처럼 종교, 정치, 전쟁 등으로 복잡하게 얽히고 설킨 역사 덕분에 영국과 아일랜드의 사이는 복잡미묘할 수 밖에 없습니다. 조너선 스위프트의 국적은 분명 영국인입니다만, 앵글로-아이리쉬(Anglo-Irish)로 불리는 영국계 아일랜드인으로 아일랜드 수도 더블린(Dublin)에서 태어났고, 더블린 세인트 패트릭 대성당(St Patrick's Cathedral) 학장(Dean)을 맡은 아일랜드 토박이입니다. 물론 옥스퍼드 대학에서 수학하고, 런던의 정계에 몸 담은 정치인이기도 합니다만... 조너선 스위프트는 옥스퍼드 대학 출신의 엘리트이지만, 그의 작품 중에 아일랜드인의 애국심을 고취하고, 영국을 비판하는 글이 적지 않아 ‘아일랜드인이 가장 자랑하는 아일랜드인’ 중 한명으로 손꼽힙니다. 우리나라로 치면, 일장기를 가슴에 달고 금메달 수상대에 섰던 손기정 선수에 비유할 수 있겠습니다. 또한 ‘세계에서 가장 유명한 아일랜드 작가(the most popular Irish author)’이자 ‘가장 인기있는 아일랜드 책(the most widely held work of Irish literature)’으로 조너선 스위프트와 걸리버 여행기(GullIver's Travels into Several Remote Nations of the World)(1726)가 꼽히는 것도 영국과 아일랜드가 분명히 다른 국가임을 강조하는 기록이죠.

조너선 스위프트(Jonathan Swift)는 성직자?! : 말년에는 더블린(Dublin) 세인트 패트릭 대성당(St Patrick's Cathedral)의 학장(Dean)까지 지냈습니다. 세인트 패트릭 대성당(St Patrick's Cathedral)은 동명의 성당이 유럽 전역에 있기 때문에 꼭 지명 더블린을 함께 병기해야 합니다. 당연하겠지만, 자신이 학장(Dean)으로 몸을 담은 세인트 패트릭 대성당(St Patrick's Cathedral)에 잠들었습니다. 자신이 묻힌 묘비의 비문까지 본인이 쓴 괴짜이기는 합니다만, 그 덕분에 그의 흔적을 찾는 세계 각지의 문학애호가들이 더블린을 찾게 되었습니다.

풍자 좀 하는데? 스위프트인(Swiftian)! : 비단 걸리버 여행기(GullIver's Travels into Several Remote Nations of the World)(1726) 외에도 그의 작품에는 독설에 가까운 풍자와 해학이 듬뿍 담겨 있다는 평가를 받습니다. 이 때문에 풍자로 가득한 작품이나 기법을 일컬어 스위프트스럽다 ? 스위프트인(Swiftian)이라 부를 정도입니다. Swiftian, like Swift's writings in tone or outlook, 톤이나 어조가 스위프트의 글 같다

화성(Mars)에 그의 이름을 딴 분화구가?! 스위프트 분화구(Swift Crater) : 화성(Mars)의 위성행성 데이모스(Deimos)에는 2개의 분화구가 있습니다. 데이모스(Deimos)의 분화구 스위프트 분화구(Swift Crater)와 볼테르 분화구(Voltaire Crater)는 모두 작가의 이름이 붙어 있는데요, 이는 작가 조너선 스위프트와 프랑수아-마리 아루엣(Fran?ois-Marie Arouet), 일명 볼테르(Voltaire)의 이름을 딴 것입니다. 조너선의 걸리버 여행기(1726)와 볼테르(Voltaire)의 미크로메가스(Microm?gas)(1752)는 모두 화성(Mars)과 그의 위성행성에 대해 언급하고 있습니다. 특히 걸리버 여행기(GullIver's Travels into Several Remote Nations of the World)(1726)는 천공의 섬 라퓨타에서 화성(Mars)에 2개의 위성이 있으며, 각각 화성의 3배와 5배 거리에서 돈다고 묘사하였습니다. 151년이 흐른 후 천문학자 아삽 홀(Asaph Hall)이 1877년 데이모스(Deimos)와 포보스(Phobos)를 일주일 간격으로 확인해 화성의 위성이 2개이며, 공전 주기 또한 걸리버 여행기에서 묘사된 것과 흡사하다는 것을 확인하였습니다. 놀라울 정도로 정확한 예측 덕분에 MBC 서프라이즈 493회에서는 조너선 스위프트가 ‘우주선(라퓨타)을 탄 것 아니냐? 시간여행자가 아닐까?’란 의혹을 제기하였습니다. 달(Moon)의 스위프트 분화구(Swift Crater)는 미국 천문학자 루이스 A. 스위프트(Lewis A. Swift)의 이름을 딴 것입니다.

아일랜드 트림(Trim)의 스위프트 거리(Swift's Street) : 조너선 스위프트가 오랫동안 거주한 아일랜드 트림(Trim)에는 그의 이름을 딴 스위프트 거리(Swift's Street)가 있으며, 정기적으로 그의 이름을 딴 스위프트 풍자 축제(Swift Satire FestIval, Trim), 트림 스위프트 축제(Trim Swift FestIval) 등을 개최합니다.

르무엘 걸리버(Lemuel GullIver)는 조너선 스위프트 본인?! : 걸리버 여행기(GullIver's Travels into Several Remote Nations of the World)(1726)는 마치 실존하는 인물인 듯 세계 여행에서 돌아온 걸리버가 출판업자 리처드 심프슨(Richard Sympson)에게 보낸 것을 출간하는 형식으로 작가를 숨기고 출간하였습니다. 그러나, 명예훼손을 우려한 출판업자가 손을 댄 부분이 워낙 많아 조너선 스위프트는 1735년 아일랜드에서 재출간하였습니다. 르무엘 걸리버(Lemuel GullIver)는 잘 아시다시피 걸리버 여행기(GullIver's Travels into Several Remote Nations of the World)(1726)의 주인공인 동시에 인간에 대한 혐오와 청결에 대한 강박, 여성혐오증 등 작가 본인의 목소리를 대변하는 페르소나입니다. 그러나, 걸리버는 외과의사란 직업과 끊이지 않는 모험심을 가진 캐릭터로, 작가의 조롱과 풍자의 대상이 된다는 점에서 동일시할 수 없는 측면도 있습니다. 르무엘 걸리버(Lemuel GullIver)의 르무엘(Lemuel)은 구약성경 잠언 31장에 등장하는 왕의 이름입니다.
