조지프 콘래드의 불안(Tales of Unrest by Joseph Conrad)(1898)은 대표작 암흑의 핵심(Heart of Darkness)(1899)을 비롯해 ‘린가드 3부작(Lindard Trilogy)’ 섬의 추방자(An Outcast of the Islands)(1896), 올마이어의 어리석음(Almayer's Folly: A Story of an Eastern River)(1895), 구조(The Rescue: A Romance of the Shallows)(1920)와 같은 장편소설은 물론 에세이와 대본까지 서른 권 이상을 출간한 폴란드 귀족 가문 출신의 영국 작가 조지프 콘래드(Joseph Conrad)(1857~1924)의 단편소설 모음집(a collection of short stories)입니다.
카레인, 기억(Karain, A Memory)부터 바보들(The Idiots), 진보의 전초 기지(An Outpost Of Progress), 반환(The Return), 그리고 라군(The Lagoon)까지 총 다섯 편의 단편으로 구성되어 있으며, 그의 다른 작품과 마찬가지로 블랙우드 매거진(Blackwood's magazine), 사보이(The Savoy), 코스모폴리스(Cosmopolis), 콘힐 매거진(Cornhill Magazine) 등 당대의 저명한 매체에 선연재한 후 단행본으로 출간되었습니다. 단 반환(The Return)은 책을 통해 최초로 공개된 작품입니다. 작가는 서문(Author’s Note)에서 각각의 단편을 집필한 시기와 해당 작품에 대한 가벼운 단상을 밝혔는데 이 부분 또한 흥미롭습니다. 작품의 마지막에 배치된 라군(The Lagoon)이 실제로는 가장 먼저 쓴 작품이라네요. 테마여행신문 TTN Korea 영어고전(English Classics)과 함께 어제도, 오늘도, 내일도 멋진 문학여행을! AUTHOR’S NOTE. Of the five stories in this volume, “The Lagoon,” the last in order, is the earliest in date. It is the first short story I ever wrote and marks, in a manner of speaking, the end of my first phase, the Malayan phase with its special subject and its verbal suggestions. Conceived in the same mood which produced “Almayer’s Folly” and “An Outcast of the Islands,” it is told in the same breath (with what was left of it, that is, after the end of “An Outcast”), seen with the same vision, rendered in the same method?if such a thing as method did exist then in my conscious relation to this new adventure of writing for print. I doubt it very much. One does one’s work first and theorises about it afterwards. It is a very amusing and egotistical occupation of no use whatever to any one and just as likely as not to lead to false conclusions.
작가의 노트. 이 책의 다섯 가지 이야기 중, 마지막 순서로 나온 "라군(The Lagoon)"이 가장 이른 시기입니다. 이 책은 제가 쓴 첫 번째 단편 소설이며, 말하자면, 제 첫 번째 단계의 마지막을 특별한 주제와 언어적 제안으로 장식하고 있습니다. "올마이어의 어리석음(Almayer’s Folly)"과 "섬의 추방자(An Outcast of the Islands)"를 만들어낸 것과 같은 기분으로 착안된 이 책은 (남은 것과 함께, 즉 "섬의 추방자"가 끝난 후에) 같은 방법으로 보입니다. 만약 그런 방법이 존재한다면, 이 새로운 모험 소설 집필에 대한 나의 의식적인 관계입니다. 프린트요. 매우 의심스럽군요. 일을 먼저 하고 나중에 이론을 세우죠. 그것은 아무에게도 쓸모없고 잘못된 결론으로 이어지지 않을 가능성이 높은 매우 재미있고 자기중심적인 직업입니다.
“An Outpost of Progress” is the lightest part of the loot I carried off from Central Africa, the main portion being of course “The Heart of Darkness.” Other men have found a lot of quite different things there and I have the comfortable conviction that what I took would not have been of much use to anybody else. And it must be said that it was but a very small amount of plunder. All of it could go into one’s breast pocket when folded neatly. As for the story itself it is true enough in its essentials. The sustained invention of a really telling lie demands a talent which I do not possess.
"진보의 전초기지(An Outpost of Progress)"는 제가 중앙아프리카에서 가져간 약탈품 중 가장 가벼운 부분이며, 그 주요 부분은 물론 "암흑의 핵심(The Heart of Darkness)"입니다. 다른 남자들은 그곳에서 꽤 많은 다른 것들을 발견했고 저는 제가 가져간 것이 다른 사람들에게 큰 도움이 되지 않았을 것이라는 편안한 확신을 가지고 있습니다. 그리고 그것은 아주 적은 양의 약탈에 불과했다고 말해야 합니다. 깔끔하게 접으면 가슴 주머니에 다 들어갈 수 있어요. 그 이야기 자체에 관해서는 본질적으로는 충분히 사실이에요. 정말로 말하는 거짓말의 지속적인 발명은 내가 가지고 있지 않은 재능을 요구합니다.
“The Idiots” is such an obviously derivative piece of work that it is impossible for me to say anything about it here. The suggestion of it was not mental but visual: the actual idiots. It was after an interval of long groping amongst vague impulses and hesitations which ended in the production of “The Nigger” that I turned to my third short story in the order of time, the first in this volume: “Karain: A Memory.”

Reading it after many years “Karain” produced on me the effect of something seen through a pair of glasses from a rather advantageous position. In that story I had not gone back to the Archipelago, I had only turned for another look at it. I admit that I was absorbed by the distan. "카레인, 기억(Karain, A Memory)"은 몇 년 후에 읽으면서 안경으로 볼 수 있는 어떤 것의 효과를 다소 유리한 위치에서 내게 보여주었습니다. 그 이야기에서 저는 군도로 돌아가지 않았습니다. 단지 다시 보려고 돌아섰을 뿐입니다. 제가 디스턴에게 흡수된 건 인정해요.
