그림자 선(線)(The Shadow Line: A Confession by Joseph Conrad)(1916)은 대표작 암흑의 핵심(Heart of Darkness)(1899)을 비롯해 ‘린가드 3부작(Lindard Trilogy)’ 섬의 추방자(An Outcast of the Islands)(1896), 올마이어의 어리석음(Almayer's Folly: A Story of an Eastern River)(1895), 구조(The Rescue: A Romance of the Shallows)(1920)와 같은 장편소설은 물론 에세이와 대본까지 서른 권 이상을 출간한 폴란드 귀족 가문 출신의 영국 작가 조지프 콘래드(Joseph Conrad)(1857~1924)의 단편소설(The novella)입니다. 1916년 뉴욕 메트로폴리탄(New York's Metropolitan Magazine)과 잉글리시 리뷰(English Review)에 게제된 후 단행본으로 출간되었습니다.

I. Only the young have such moments. I don’t mean the very young. No. The very young have, properly speaking, no moments. It is the privilege of early youth to live in advance of its days in all the beautiful continuity of hope which knows no pauses and no introspection. One closes behind one the little gate of mere boyishness?and enters an enchanted garden. Its very shades glow with promise. Every turn of the path has its seduction. And it isn’t because it is an undiscovered country. One knows well enough that all mankind had streamed that way. It is the charm of universal experience from which one expects an uncommon or personal sensation?a bit of one’s own.
I. 그런 순간은 젊은이들에게만 있습니다. 아주 어리다는 뜻이 아닙니다. 아니요. 아주 어린 아이들은 적절하게 말해서 순간이 없습니다. 멈춤과 성찰이 없는 아름다운 희망의 연속성 속에서 시대를 앞서 사는 것은 초기 청소년의 특권입니다. 하나는 단순한 소년의 작은 문 뒤에서 닫히고 마법의 정원으로 들어갑니다. 그 그늘은 약속으로 빛납니다. 길의 모든 방향에는 유혹이 있습니다. 그리고 미지의 나라이기 때문이 아닙니다. 모든 인류가 그런 식으로 흘러갔다는 것은 누구나 잘 알고 있습니다. 그것은 흔하지 않거나 개인적인 감각, 즉 자신의 약간의 감각을 기대하는 보편적인 경험의 매력입니다.
IV. With her anchor at the bow and clothed in canvas to her very trucks, my command seemed to stand as motionless as a model ship set on the gleams and shadows of polished marble. It was impossible to distinguish land from water in the enigmatical tranquillity of the immense forces of the world. A sudden impatience possessed me. “Won’t she answer the helm at all?” I said irritably to the man whose strong brown hands grasping the spokes of the wheel stood out lighted on the darkness; like a symbol of mankind’s claim to the direction of its own fate.
IV. 그녀의 닻이 뱃머리에 있고 캔버스 옷을 입고 그녀의 바로 그 트럭에 오를 때 내 명령은 광택이 나는 대리석의 반짝임과 그림자 위에 놓인 모형 배처럼 움직이지 않는 것처럼 보였습니다. 세계의 거대한 세력의 불가사의한 평온 속에서 육지와 물을 구별하는 것은 불가능했습니다. 갑작스러운 조바심이 나를 사로잡았다. "그녀는 조타에 전혀 대답하지 않을 것입니까?" 나는 바퀴살을 잡고 있는 강한 갈색 손이 어둠을 밝히고 있는 그 남자에게 짜증스럽게 말했습니다. 자신의 운명의 방향에 대한 인류의 주장의 상징처럼.
V. I heard the clatter of the scissors escaping from his hand, noted the perilous heave of his whole person over the edge of the bunk after them, and then, returning to my first purpose, pursued my course on the deck. The sparkle of the sea filled my eyes. It was gorgeous and barren, monotonous and without hope under the empty curve of the sky. The sails hung motionless and slack, the very folds of their sagging surfaces moved no more than carved granite. The impetuosity of my advent made the man at the helm start slightly. A block aloft squeaked incomprehensibly, for what on earth could have made it do so?
V. 나는 그의 손에서 가위의 덜걱거림이 빠져나가는 소리를 들었고, 그들의 뒤를 따라가는 침대 가장자리 위로 그의 전신이 위태롭게 몸을 움츠리는 것을 주목한 다음, 나의 첫 번째 목적으로 돌아와서 갑판 위에서 나의 진로를 따랐습니다. 바다의 반짝임이 내 눈을 가득 채웠습니다. 하늘의 텅 빈 곡선 아래는 화려하고 황량하고 단조롭고 희망이 없었습니다. 돛은 움직이지 않고 느슨하게 매달려 있었고, 처진 표면의 주름은 조각된 화강암에 지나지 않았습니다. 나의 출현의 성급함은 조타수를 약간 출발하게 했습니다. 높이 솟은 블록이 이해할 수 없을 정도로 삐걱거렸습니다. 도대체 무엇 때문에 그렇게 할 수 있었을까요?
VI. As we all went up it occurred to me that there ought to be a man at the helm. I raised my voice not much above a whisper, and, noiselessly, an uncomplaining spirit in a fever-wasted body appeared in the light aft, the head with hollow eyes illuminated against the blackness which had swallowed up our world?and the universe. The bared forearm extended over the upper spokes seemed to shine with a light of its own.
VI. 우리 모두가 위로 올라가면서 나는 키를 잡는 사람이 있어야 한다는 생각이 들었습니다. 나는 속삭임보다 더 큰 목소리로 목소리를 높였으며, 우리 세계와 우주를 집어삼킨 어둠에 비춰진 공허한 눈을 가진 머리와 열로 소모된 몸에 불평하지 않는 영혼이 소리 없이 나타났습니다. 위쪽 스포크 위로 뻗어 있는 벌거벗은 팔뚝이 스스로 빛을 발하는 것 같았습니다.
