I am inclined to hope that a fuller knowledge will show that the same holds good for our enemies, and that in spite of individual exceptions, they have never systematically used anything except what one of their number described as a 'gentlemanly' bullet.

The approach to the offices of Girdlestone and Co. was not a very dignified one, nor would the uninitiated who traversed it form any conception of the commercial prosperity of the firm in question. The liabilities of the firm of Girdlestone proved to be less serious than was at first imagined. After the catastrophe which had befallen the founder of the business, there was almost a panic in Fenchurch Street, but on examination it proved that though the books had been deliberately falsified for some time, yet trade had been so brisk of late that, with a little help, the firm could continue to exist. Dimsdale threw all his money and his energy into the matter, and took Gilray into partnership, which proved to be an excellent thing for both of them. I much doubt how he will receive it, as he is a man of fierce temper, and very sensitive about anything approaching to an infringement of his rights. I shall venture after dinner to say a few words to him upon the subject. I have always found that he will tolerate from me what he would resent from any other member of the crew. Amsterdam Island, at the north-west corner of Spitzbergen, is visible upon our starboard quarter?a rugged line of volcanic rocks, intersected by white seams, which represent glaciers. It is curious to think that at the present moment there is probably no human being nearer to us than the Danish settlements in the south of Greenland?a good nine hundred miles as the crow flies. A captain takes a great responsibility upon himself when he risks his vessel under such circumstances. No whaler has ever remained in these latitudes till so advanced a period of the year.

One word before we proceed with our story, or our chronicle rather, as every word of it is based upon fact. The colonial trooper of fifteen or twenty years ago was a very different man from his representative of to-day. Not that I would imply any slur upon the courage of the latter; but for reckless dare-devilry and knight-errantry the old constabulary has never been equalled. The reason is a simple one. Men of gentle blood, younger sons and wild rakes who had outrun the constable, were sent off to Australia with some wild idea of making their fortunes. On arriving they found Melbourne by no means the El Dorado they expected; they were unfit for any employment, their money was soon dissipated, and they unerringly gravitated into the mounted police. Thus a sort of colonial "Maison Rouge" became formed, where the lowest private had as much pride of birth and education as his officers. 작품은 주인공 존 맥비티(John McVittie)가 쓴 일기장의 형식으로 진행됩니다. 영국의 중부 지방에서 변호사(attorney)로 근무하다가 비열하고 매연에 찌든 마을(their vile, smoke-polluted town)을 떠나 운둔하는 인물입니다. 부유한 삼촌(M'Vittie of Glencairn)의 사망 후 물려받은 스코틀랜드의 외딴 해변 마을 케이스네스(the coast of Caithness)가 싫지 않았던 것은 업무에서 벗어나 자유롭게 독서와 악기, 실험 등을 즐기며 살기 위해서였죠. 은퇴 후 그의 행보는 변호사라기보다는 철학자와 과학자에 가깝습니다. 그런데 이게 웬걸! 도시를 벗어났다고해도, 사람으로부터 완전히 자유로울 수는 없었습니다. 맨시 베이(the coast of Mansie Bay, in Caithness)에서 한참 떨어진 그의 집은 한적하기 이를 데 없었습니다만... 폭풍이 세차게 불어 닥친 6월의 어느 날 해변에 난파선이 표류해버렸지 뭡니까!! 아무리 속세를 떠났다고 해도 차마 사람의 목숨이 달린 구조작업만큼은 맥비티도 거부할 수 없었습니다. 난파선에서 발견한 단 한명의 생존자 ? 어린 러시아 소녀를 구조해 자신의 집으로 데려와 돌봅니다.

I followed as rapidly as I could, furious at this threatened invasion, but long before I reached the house he had disappeared through the open door. I heard a great scream from the inside, and as I came nearer the sound of a man's bass voice speaking rapidly and loudly. When I looked in, the girl, Sophie Ramusine, was crouching in a corner, cowering away, with fear and loathing expressed on her averted face and in every line of her shrinking form. The other, with his dark eyes flashing, and his outstretched hands quivering with emotion, was pouring forth a torrent of passionate pleading words. He made a step forward to her as I entered, but she writhed still further away, and uttered a sharp cry like that of a rabbit when the weasel has him by the throat.

I was too late. By the time I reached the water's edge he was a hundred yards away, making the boat spring with every stroke of his powerful arms. I uttered a wild cry of impotent anger, and stamped up and down the sands like a maniac. He turned and saw me. Rising from his seat he made me a graceful bow, and waved his hand to me. It was not a triumphant or a derisive gesture. Even my furious and distempered mind recognised it as being a solemn and courteous leave-taking. Then he settled down to his oars once more, and the little skiff shot away out over the bay.

After breakfast was over, however, I got a clue to her nationality. Passing along the beach once more, I saw that in a cleft of the ridge a piece of wood had been jammed. I rowed out to it in my boat, and brought it ashore. It was part of the sternpost of a boat, and on it, or rather on the piece of wood attached to it, was the word "Archangel," painted in strange, quaint lettering.

코난 도일의 뮤즈(Muse)가 나폴레옹이라구?! : 코난 도일은 나폴레옹 보나파르트(Napoleon Bonaparte)(1769~1821)와 그의 시대에 깊이 매료되었고, 이를 소재로 소설을 집필하였습니다. 1892년 출간된 액션 모험 소설(an action and adventure novel) 위대한 그림자와 나폴레옹 이야기(The Great Shadow and Other Napoleonic Tales by Arthur Conan Doyle)(1892)를 시작으로 제라르 준장의 결혼(The Marriage of the Brigadier)(1910)까지……. 특히 나폴레옹 전쟁 당시 활약한 실존 인물 에티엔 모리스 제라르(Etienne Maurice Gerard)(1773~1852)를 모티브로 삼은 제라르 준장(Brigadier Gerard)을 주인공으로 19편의 소설을 발표하였으며, 이를 제라르 사가(The Gerard Saga)라고 칭합니다. 제라르 사가(The Gerard Saga)에 공통적으로 등장하는 제라르 준장(Brigadier Gerard)은 멋지고 근사한 인물이라기보다는 영국의 프랑스인에 대한 고정관념을 대변하는 허영심도 말도 많은 코믹한 영웅(comedic hero)으로 그려집니다. 그러나 코난 도일의 풍자와 유머는 프랑스 혹은 프랑스인이 아니라 오직 제라르 준장(Brigadier Gerard)으로 국한된다는 점에서 영리하게 선을 타고 있지요.
물론 코난 도일 외에도 수많은 작가, 시인, 화가, 영화감독 등이 나폴레옹과 그의 시대를 배경으로 한 작품을 셀 수도 없이 창작하였습니다만, 이십년 가까운 기간 동안 나폴레옹의 시대를 노래한 코난 도일에게 그야말로 ‘창작의 원천’이라고 해도 과언은 아닐 것입니다. 번외적으로 코난 도일은 위대한 그림자와 나폴레옹 이야기(The Great Shadow and Other Napoleonic Tales by Arthur Conan Doyle)(1892)를 출간한 1892년 첫 번째 아내 메리 우이자(Mary Louise)(1889~1976))와의 사이에서 첫 아들 아서 앨린 킹슬리(Arthur Alleyne Kingsley)(1892~1918)를 얻었습니다.
코난 도일이 창조한 코믹한 영웅(comedic hero) 제라르 준장(Brigadier Gerard)의 모험! : 코난 도일이 1894년부터 1903년까지 스트랜드 매거진(Strand Magazine)에 연재한 제라드 준장의 이야기는 제라르 준장의 회상(The Exploits of Brigadier Gerard by Arthur Conan Doyle)(1896)과 제라르의 모험(The Adventures of Gerard by Arthur Conan Doyle)(1903)으로 나눠 단행본 출간되었습니다. 이후에도 그의 여정은 멈추지 않았고, 1910년 출간된 제라르 준장의 결혼(The Marriage of the Brigadier)(1910)을 끝으로 마무리되었습니다. 1894년부터 1910년까지 이십여 년에 걸쳐 연재된 시리즈이니만큼 주인공 제라르 준장(Brigadier Gerard)에 대해서도 독자들의 관심이 뜨거울 수 밖에 없었습니다.

다작과 속작으로 유명한 코난 도일의 작품답게 세부적인 오류가 적지 않다는 단점이 있으나, 작가조차 미처 몰랐을 설정 오류를 찾는 것 또한 코난 도일의 작품을 즐기는 하나의 방법일 것입니다. 국내에는 거의 알려져 있진 않으나, 제라르 사가(The Gerard Saga)는 1915년 무성 영화 제라르 준장(Brigadier Gerard), 프랑스 영화 Undramous Napoleon, 더 파이팅 이글(The Fighting Eagle)(1927), 제라르의 모험(The Adventures of Gerard)(1970) 등의 영화를 비롯해 1954년과 2007년 BBC 라디오 드라마로 제작되었습니다. 대부분 유튜브에서도 찾아보기 어려운 고전명작이네요.
